Background & Early Career
Where are you originally from?
I grew up in Indiana. Go Hoosiers!
Have you always worked in the dental field? If not, what other fields or degrees came first?
Yes, I have always worked in the dental field. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Franklin College in 2010 and worked for a year at a dental laboratory before enrolling in dental hygiene school.
In 2013, I earned my Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene from Indiana University South Bend and worked for four years as a dental hygienist before pursuing graduate school.
I later completed a Master of Public Health (MPH) with a concentration in Health Policy and Management in 2019. Before moving abroad, I also worked as an adjunct clinical instructor for Indiana University South Bend and The Ohio State University.

Singapore, Singapore — Gardens by the Bay.

My husband and I were looking for a new adventure. We wanted to live and work abroad while traveling and experiencing new places.
What did your family say?

Were you afraid?
I was more nervous than afraid. I’ve traveled all over the world and felt prepared for the move. Singapore is a very safe country.

Practice, Team & Clinical Setting
What type of practice do you work for, and what is the team like?
The practice focuses on holistic dental care for the entire family. Our team includes cosmetic dentists, general dentists, an orthodontist, dental assistants, and dental hygienists practicing in Singapore.
Social Life & Daily Living Abroad
What is your social life like?
My social life has been unique due to the global pandemic, but there is still so much to do. I spend time with coworkers, try new food at hawker centers, visit iconic landmarks, and explore shopping malls.
What do you most enjoy? Least enjoy?
I love being outdoors and have really enjoyed the hiking, trails, and nature here. The humidity has been the hardest adjustment for me.
Patients & Clinical Experience
What are the patients like? Any standout experiences?
The patients are awesome, and I’ve had only good experiences so far. Many of my patients are part of the expat community. It’s interesting learning about their professions and how long they’ve lived in Singapore.
Professional Growth & Personal Reflection
How has this experience changed you professionally and personally?
Professionally, I’ve learned new ways to talk about and practice dentistry that I may not have experienced back home. Exposure to people from all walks of life has expanded my understanding of how dental care is perceived differently across cultures.
Personally, I’ve met amazing people at work and learned about their backgrounds, religions, and languages. It’s been a joy sharing my passion for dental hygiene with patients from around the world.
Career Path & Future Plans
Do you still practice hygiene? Any plans to leave the field?
Yes, I am currently living and working in Singapore. I would like to pursue a doctorate degree and potentially broaden my career as a professor.
Do you have any side projects or global health involvement?
Not at the moment, but I’ve been fortunate to volunteer on dental and public health trips in Costa Rica, Haiti, Belize, and Cameroon. In the future, I could see myself working on a global health project.

Looking Ahead
What’s next for you?
I plan to further my education and earn a doctorate degree in health science with a concentration in global health.
Do you have any regrets?
None at all. We are absolutely loving Singapore and everything it offers. Even if we eventually move home, we’ll always be grateful for this adventure.
How would you like to be remembered?
As a super funny, hard-working person with a passion for volunteering.
Advice for International Dental Hygienists
Any wisdom for hygienists considering working abroad?
Go for it. Don’t live vicariously through other hygienists working abroad. Reach out, network, join expat groups, and contact dental offices directly to see if they hire foreign-trained dental hygienists.
